Toxic [Urban] Landscapes
The project is based in the mining belt of Johannesburg and is focused on transforming an abandoned mine space in the context of Riverlea into a point of urban-eco acupuncture.

The project investigates the impact of decommissioned mines on surrounding communities. The project investigates the mining belt of Johannesburg, using the methodology of the powers of ten which illustrates the relationship of the macro and the micro. The project is then explored in a greater context being the mining belt and then zoomed in and looked closer at the communities along this belt. The research consists of a mixed methodological approach which will is aimed at investigating the impact of past and present toxic mining practices upon the community of Riverlea and similar types of communities in the mining belt.

The project explores diverse ways in which a toxic mining landscape can be mitigated and developed in to a space of healing and opportunity for the previously disadvantaged communities. The project proposes an experimental nursery that aims to remediate and rehabilitate the local ecosystem of the community. The programs will be community driven initiatives such as skills development, economic empowerment opportunity, learning and engaging with the greater public.
