UNIT 15X︎︎︎
Toxic [Urban] Landscapes
My MDP looks into the lack of dignity as a form of toxicity, taking a closer look into spatial dignity in particular, and the impact it has on the human beings utilising specific spaces. The focus of this subject will be the community of Thabong, located in Welkom within the Free State Province. The main highlight will be on the effect of the bucket toilets placed within the community and their associated smells. This will further illustrate the persistence of undignified and unsanitary ways that black South Africans continue to live, enduring undignified environments and living conditions that have been allocated for them.

The project argues that planning for spatial dignity should be an act of emancipation, one in which every human being can conceive their dignity. The existing SANS 10400 - A: 2010, Edition 3 does not enshrine principles of dignity for buildings belonging to category 1, such as the RDP. Therefore, a new template of building regulations will be designed, to promote the construction of buildings that ensure people’s lives have been taken into consideration. This would then be explored through three interventions; from a private setting to a public setting.
