Toxic [Urban] Landscapes
The ongoing legacy of apartheid is evident by the ever-worsening difficulties of inequality, economic and social rights deprivations in South Africa. We are aware of the power and influence of space before 1994. It was employed as a tool to organise our society. (Govender, 2013) The project aims to explore the theme of toxic landscapes of impoverished communities along the Witwatersrand.

The project is to bring awareness to the spatial injustices throughout the community, past and present, and create a space of convergence for the community. It is a transformation of the site into an urban common – a site where visitors can learn the history of the Riverlea and how it came about. Information and facts that are not simple to come by.

To become a destination for users, the proposed programs, that came from suggestions by the community through an interview conducted by Sandra Zafouris, were considered to intensify the area's use as a recreational node for the local community.
