In this body of work titled the Pub House: Social Condensation for Self – Governance, the politics and history of alcohol consumption is investigated to suggest alternative means of mobilisation of a society who are and have been intoxicated for generations. In the context of this project, intoxication refers to the unconscious state of awareness of one’s socio-political realities. The project aims to engage with issues of class, race and gender whilst drawing a link between the socio-political benefits and consequences of intoxication.
In “The Politics of Alcohol” by James Nicholls he states that “drink not only stimulates public debate but tends to expose underlying cultural and political tensions as drinking is a ubiquitous social activity, its framing in public discourse, the kinds of problems it is associated with and the solutions which are proposed act as a barometer of the cultural anxieties and political attitudes which are at work in a particular period.” Based on Nicholls’ statement, the relationship between alcohol and socio-political engagement can be drawn. This begins to suggest that alcohol may be used as a sinister or benevolent device.
To touch on the possibilities and influences of alcohol, this body of work outlines the following themes:
1. Origins and significance of alcohol
2. Conditions of alcohol consumption
3. The social condenser
