To Be Orna-ment To Be
For my year project I am reimagining the way designers interact and include the end users within the design process. As an aspiring architect and designer I have noticed that often we replace the actual end users with a generalised individual that is supposed to represent all the users.
Unfortunately this individual rarely covers all the needs and requirements of actual users. The challenge to including the end user within the design process is to get people to engage, and feel confident enough to share their opinion. The big issue, however, is that people are hesitant to engage with strangers, especially in this case where my site of investigation is a post graduate residence filled with people that have never met each other.
The main goal with my installations was to collect large amounts of information that could then be used to create better design solutions, but as the project unfolded it has become clear that creating community, transforming existing spaces through interaction, and forming a close relationship with the participants is almost more valuable than the information gathered through the process.
