UNIT 15X︎︎︎
Toxic [Urban] Landscapes
The project investigates the effects of the toxicity of Krugersdorp mine, located west of Johannesburg, on the Tweelopiespruit river, the game reserve, the Cradle of Humankind world heritage site, and the surrounding communities.

Toxic is normally defined as something of a chemical nature that, when ingested, can be harmful or even lethal. Or simply something bad for you. Toxicity can also be found within architecture, landscape, ecology, and human relations. This is seen in the designs of our cities as well as how the undesigned spaces that are created get used, misused and extracted.

My project uses remediation and restoration as guiding principles, that is, the remediation of the landscape and local economy and restoration of the Afrikaans language heritage. This is done through a series of ecological public space interventions such a constructed wetland, leisure park, and an annual Afrikaans botanical festival. The aim of the annual festival is to reveal the multiple influences on Afrikaans as a language that is often misunderstood and mostly associated only with oppression and apartheid.
